Rebecca Foon

Teacher | Owner

Rebecca Foon is a co-founder and co-owner of Modo Yoga NYC. Becca fell in love with the practice of yoga as she discovered the therapeutic and meditative foundations of linking movement and breath while healing a back injury in early 2000. Over the years, she has studied with a diversity of teachers that have informed and inspired her teaching and practice, including Dina T, Hart Lazer, Annie Carpenter, Jessica Robertson and Sarah Powers.

She met Unik Ernest in 2013, and the two instantly connected around the idea of building a sustainable yoga program in schools in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Since then, Rebecca has been working closely with the Edeyo Foundation on developing the program with her partners at Modo Yoga NYC along with Dina Tsouluhas (co-owner/co-founder of sister studio Modo Montreal) and Valerie Verdier. She also co-founded the charity, Junglekeepers, along with her partners at Modo Yoga NYC and Paul Rosolie, dedicated to protecting the most biodiverse part of the Amazon rainforest in the Madre de Dios region in Peru.

Rebecca is an avid environmentalist dedicated to integrating holistic sustainability principles into her yoga teaching and practice. She is a sustainability expert and a charter member of the consulting co-operative Sustainability Solutions Group. Rebecca is also an award-winning cellist, vocalist, and composer who has performed and recorded with a wide range of artists including Patti Smith, Nick Cave, Lhasa de Sela, Tanya Tagaq and Vic Chesnutt. She is a founder of the music groups Saltland and Esmerine, and a member of the kirtan music collective Lila. She is currently co-curating with Jesse Paris Smith, Pathway To Paris, a call to action event series that brings together artists and climate change experts to raise consciousness around climate change leading up to the UN Conference on Climate Change in December 2015.
